Get Your Driveway Summer Ready

May 13, 2019

During the year, driveways attract oil stains, mud, weeks and other marks through general wear and tear. Removing stubborn stains and moss and weeds can be more exhausting and time consuming than regular mud and soil stains.

Our team have put together a step by step guide of how to remove those tough stains, helping you get your driveway summer ready.

Step one: Remove any dirt, debris and weeds

Use an outdoor brush to sweep your driveway to remove dirt and debris. A wire brush can be a great tool to remove weeds, more stubborn weeds may require a weed removal tool. Deep-rooted weeds may require a weed burner to remove the problem.

Step two: Jet wash your driveway

Using a power washer, jet wash your drive to clean away any excess dirt. Most home power washers are affordable and cost between £45 and £170 dependent on specification. To protect doors, garages or porches from any stones, dirt or debris you can use cardboard to shield them. To avoid deep puddles, spray towards the water channels.

Step three: Remove deep stains

Some stains are harder to remove than others, for example oil or antifreeze spillages. We advise to use;

  • Washing Powder

  • Baking Soda

  • Oil degreaser

Be sure to wet the stain and leave your chemical of choice on the stain for at least 15 minutes. You may want to repeat this step until the stain has been completely removed.

Step four: Fill block paving gaps

To add sand to fill gaps to block paving, firstly you need to ensure that the driveway is completely clean and dry. Using a very fine sand, tip the sand onto the driveway and simply brush/spread the sand onto the driveway filling the gaps. Be sure to remove the sand from the face of the brick. Try to plan ahead to do this during dry weather.

Step five: Apply sealer
Applying a driveway sealant can help prevent your driveway being affected by weather, stain or weed damage. One of the easiest ways to apply a driveway sealant is to use a roller and a roller tray. Be sure to check the instructions for advice on dilution to ensure an even application to your driveway. The driveway will require a few hours to dry upon completion of application.
