Tips to Help Protect Your Driveway This Winter

It’s that time of year again, winter is here and there's four months of snow expected, with ‘the coldest winter in a decade’ set to hit the UK.

As concrete and asphalt driveways are porous, they expand and contract with the change in weather, which can cause a driveway to crack. We’ve put together some steps to help you prevent your driveway cracking during the winter months.

Before the temperature drops:

One of the best ways to prevent damage to your driveway during the winter months is to prevent water access. Investing in a quality sealant will provide many benefits, including; keeping from entering the concrete, extends the driveway’s life and protect it from cracking.

Sealant can easily be applied through a sprayer or roller, or if you don’t feel up to it many driveway companies can provide this at a small cost. The driveway should be cleaned prior to the application.

Before the cold weather sets in, check whether your driveway has a drainage system to prevent the build-up of water on or around the concrete.

To prevent further damage, we advise repairing any existing cracks before the temperature drops. This can include cracking from previous winters, pot holes and areas where plants have appeared.

During the winter months:

Try to avoid de-icing products on your concrete driveways, the chemicals can cause the top layer of concrete to peel, flake or chip-away increasing the damage to your driveway.

Alternatively, you can use salt or natural cat litter as a de-icer.

Make sure you remove snow and ice before it melts into your concrete. Snow can turn into ice quickly, which is a lot harder to remove without causing damage to your driveway.

We advise using a plastic shovel and being as gentle as possible to remove the show which will help to prevent chipping the concrete.

The above steps should help prevent damage to your driveway during the winter weather. However, should your driveway suffer from cracking as a result of the temperature dropping, our team can help by repairing the cracks or resurfacing the area.
